Here at Butterfly Dental in Altrincham we’ll match the filling to the colour of your teeth and then shape it to look and feel as your tooth did before the filling. No amalgam is used. Instead we use a combination of a resin and nano-particles of glass which gives white fillings their dental name: composite resins.

Another attraction of white composite resin fillings is that they are 100% mercury-free. So people who are concerned about the potential risks of mercury containing silver fillings often opt to have them removed and replaced with the new material.

Porcelain Inlays / Porcelain Onlays.

Your dentist will examine your teeth and if the cavity is over-large or if there is insufficient tooth structure to support a white filling, he may recommend a porcelain inlay or onlay as a better option.

The reason is because porcelain inlays / porcelain onlays are much more durable than white fillings and can last as long as 30 years. And unlike fillings, which can often reduce the strength of a tooth, porcelain inlays / porcelain onlays can actually increase its strength.

Porcelain inlays / porcelain onlays take a couple of appointments to complete and fit into or onto the tooth and differ from a crown which is placed over the entire tooth.

At the first session, we’ll painlessly remove the decay or old filling, take a detailed impression of the tooth and then insert a temporary white filling. Our ceramist will then use the impression to custom-made a porcelain inlay or porcelain onlay which will be bonded to the tooth at the second session a week or so later.
